Gail Turnbull
Gail graduated from Sydney Institute of Technology in 1987, so has been practicing for nearly 33 years, making her most likely one of the longest practicing current Podiatrists in Newcastle/Lake Macquarie. Gail initially worked for the Hunter Health Service as their first community health Podiatrist. She then opened a small “stand alone” clinic at Swansea in 1990, and still services that area once a week, working out of a room in the NovaCare aged care services building at the back of the pensioners hall.
Gail opened the Cardiff clinic in 1995, initially part time whilst working for Hunter Health, and has built the business up over many years to being a busy clinic. Gail is a dedicated, warm, compassionate person who loves working with people, and believes in being there to lend an ear to her patients as need be and has built up many relationships with patients from their long term attendance. Gail has extensive experience in all aspects of Podiatry and is never happier than when her patients tell her how much better they feel - whether it be from help with orthotics to correcting a biomechanical/foot pain issue, or just having sorted out an ingrown toenail, corns or callous. She believes strongly in keeping up to date with skills and knowledge and attends as many seminars that are of interest as possible. She always has exceeded the Podiatry registration/AHPRA requirements for continuing education (CPD).
At home you will most likely find Gail in the kitchen, garden or looking after her young grandchildren.
Sherrie Whitehouse
Sherrie graduated from Sydney Institute of Technology in 1992. She has extensive experience in all aspects of podiatry, from treating corns, callouses, thick toenails, ingrown toenails and thick and cracked heels to managing biomechanical problems resulting in foot pain and discomfort. Sherrie delights in people entering her room with sore feet or toes and leaving with a smile, telling her how good their feet feel.
Sherrie is especially interested in helping people living with diabetes and the special care they need, including diabetic foot assessments. She regularly attends seminars and conferences and does online CPD to keep her knowledge and skills up to date.
Outside of work Sherrie is an elite velodrome cyclist, having completed in numerous national and international competitions, and having held numerous age championships and titles over the years.
Angela Hakvoort
I owned and ran a successful Podiatry practice in Sydney for 36 years but now live near Newcastle, to achieve a long-held dream of owning some land to plant and grow a garden. I am currently working part-time at Cardiff Podiatry.
Over my working life I have very much enjoyed treating people with foot issues. There are not many foot problems out there that I have not had an answer for. I bring along skills in all aspects of general Podiatry and some other interests in joint mobilisation and muscle rehabilitation techniques.
I am very passionate about Joint Mobilisation for Feet. If you have ever had a Chiropractic or Osteopathic adjustment, joint mobilisation is the same but for feet. Detailed knowledge of the joints and how they should move and patience working with the joint, is the science of foot mobilisation.
Assessment involves testing the range of movement of each joint (the foot has many bones, hence many joints). Podiatrists with their detailed knowledge of feet are best placed to mobilise joints in the feet.
Causes can be a lifetime of walking on feet in the wrong position or simple ankle flips (like landing awkwardly when coming off e.g. a gutter or uneven ground). Sports injury is a big cause of mal-alignment of feet. This, of course, can affect children and adults equally.
During the assessment, the Podiatrist works out which joints are affected and then uses a sequenced pattern to mobilise the foot. Often a section of joints is affected together so we work on that whole area. The procedures are pain free and involve quick directed mobilisations to get the joint to move into its movable position.
This is very help post injury and future therapies where we will be realigning feet such as orthotic therapy. Combined with Muscle testing and muscle release techniques, it gives a well-rounded treatment to the muscular-skeletal problems of feet.
